Kayana is a passionate advocate and changemaker dedicated to transforming the child welfare system. She uses her personal and professional experiences to elevate youth voices, strengthen family stability, and create pathways for lasting change. She served as the Transitioning Age Youth Coordinator with CASA. She worked with the Governor’s Office under John Bel Edwards, the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services, and Chafee Independent Living Skills to support youth aging out of care. Kayana was part of the HCR 168 Taskforce on Youth Aging Out of Foster Care and the SCR10 Taskforce on Extending the Age of Foster Care, helping to shape state policies that put youth and families first. Frustrated by the impact of Medicaid, her advocacy led to changes in how the Department of Children and Family Services and the Department of Health and Hospitals manage transitions, ensuring youth maintain coverage at 19.
Kayana’s leadership work earned her the Louisiana Angels Award, recognition by the State Legislature, and the Young Adult Achievement Award. She also partnered with Casey Family to co-author three national youth engagement briefs and served as President of the Louisiana Elite Advocacy Force (LEAF) and the Foster Together Network-Technology and Transitioning Age Youth Board. Now, she serves as the Peer Support Advocate for Southeast Louisiana Legal Services, Honorary Member of LEAF, and President of The Pelican Center for Children and Families Board. Through every role, Kayana continues to champion permanent placements, family connections, and meaningful youth engagement across Louisiana and beyond.
