Counsel for Kids
The Counsel for Kids Campaign made great strides building awareness of the benefits of client-directed legal representation. Each year, state legislatures consider proposals that will change models of representation to the client-directed model. This session, California Assembly Bill 373 followed suit by requiring judges to appoint counsel to represent the stated interest of nonminor dependents, which further supports youth independence and decision-making. Governor Newsom approved the legislation on October 1 after it passed both chambers. This law will impact 6,801 dependents.
