Child Welfare Law Specialist Certification at 20: Proof, Impact, Next

Since 2006, the Child Welfare Law Specialist (CWLS) credential has aimed to raise the quality of attorney practice. Does it work? A year-long independent evaluation says yes. Hear the evidence, what it means for courts and families, how CWLS will evolve, and practical steps to bring certification to your jurisdiction.

Allison GreenAllison Green, JD, CWLS – Chief Legal Officer, NACC
Allison Green, JD, CWLS, joined Team NACC in 2019. She manages the organization’s policy advocacy, oversees amicus work, and provides training and technical assistance to child welfare practitioners nationwide. Allison previously served as a Foster America Fellow at Missouri’s Children’s Division and as Senior Supervising Attorney at the Children’s Law Center of Washington, D.C. Allison started her career as a Jesuit Volunteer at Legal Services for Children in San Francisco and also worked as a counselor at a youth shelter.

She earned her law degree at Georgetown, where she was a Public Interest Law Scholar and recipient of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers Student Advocacy and Juvenile Justice Clinic Public Service Awards. She is a certified Child Welfare Law Specialist (CWLS) and has volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate. She is currently licensed to practice law in Washington, D.C.

Stef SloanStef Sloan, PhD – Founder and Principal Investigator, Participatory Action Research Collective
Dr. Stef Sloan is a participatory mixed methods researcher, evaluator, and social work professor. Dr. Sloan holds expertise in examining child welfare law programs, interventions, and services, and is passionate about using a variety of methods to demonstrate impact and efficacy of child welfare law programs that promote continued investment. Dr. Sloan’s subject matter expertise includes child welfare and civil legal solutions, pre-petition and preventative legal programs, promoting the voices of lived expertise populations, child maltreatment prevention, child development, child and family protective factors, and strengthening families.

Daniel TrujilloDaniel Trujillo – Director of Certification, Sales, and Technology, NACC
Daniel joined the NACC staff in 2003 and has served in a variety of roles. He is currently the Director of Certification, Sales, and Technology. He oversees the Child Welfare Law Specialist certification program, collaborates with CIP/CJA and states on live and virtual trainings, and manages NACC’s tech delivery platforms. He truly enjoys serving the hardworking child welfare community to deliver the best services that NACC has to offer.

CLE

California (60-minute hour)
This participatory activity has been accredited by the State Bar of California for a maximum of 1.5 hours of General credit for live and on-demand participation. Attorneys must sign in for CLE.

Colorado (50‐minute hour) 
This course is pending accreditation by the Colorado Board of Continuing Legal and Judicial Education for a maximum of 1.8 units of General credit for live and on-demand participation. Attorneys must sign in for CLE. Colorado is a self-report state.

Attorneys in all other jurisdictions must seek CLE accreditation individually if desired.
